Layering for the cooler months
When the temperature drops by ten degrees you don't need an entirely new wardrobe — you need to layer the one you have. Here's how we wear our cooler-months kit.
Start with a base that breathes
A 240gsm midweight tee handles the cold better than people give it credit for, as long as you layer over it. Lighter base layers cling and trap sweat — exactly what you don't want sitting against your skin when you go from cold outside to warm inside.
Hoodie under a coat is fine
There's a stigma around layering a hoodie under outerwear that we've never understood. A heavyweight fleece hoodie under a wool overcoat is one of the warmest, easiest combinations in menswear. The drawstrings can stay or get tucked — your call.
Don't neglect your bottom half
A pleated cotton-twill pant in a midweight (300gsm+) keeps you noticeably warmer than the jeans most people default to. Add a thin merino sock and you can go from morning commute to evening dinner without changing out.
One unexpected accessory
An umbrella you actually like. Most umbrellas live in a corner and come out only as a last resort. A good one — compact, fibreglass, opens at the press of a button — gets used. Which is the whole point.
